Data Center UPS

Noun
|
Sounds like: "da-ta cen-ter tier u-p-s"

A Data Center Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is a backup power system that provides continuous, reliable power to critical IT equipment during power outages, fluctuations, and other electrical disturbances. A UPS uses batteries and power conversion equipment to maintain power to connected devices, helping prevent downtime, data loss, and equipment damage while providing time for backup generators or other power systems to take over when needed.

How Does a Data Center UPS Work?

A data center UPS sits between the facility’s incoming power supply and critical IT equipment. Under normal operating conditions, the UPS supplies power to connected equipment while maintaining and monitoring the electrical supply. If utility power is interrupted or falls outside acceptable limits, the UPS uses its stored energy to keep connected equipment running, with the response depending on the UPS design.

The UPS continues supplying power for a limited amount of time based on its battery capacity and connected load. In facilities with backup generators, this provides time for the generator to start and assume the load. UPS systems can also protect IT equipment from power disturbances such as voltage sags, surges, and spikes.

Types of Data Center UPS Systems

Data center UPS systems are generally categorized by how they manage incoming power and transfer to battery backup.

  • Online double-conversion UPS. An online double-conversion UPS continuously converts incoming AC power to DC and then back to AC before delivering it to connected equipment. This provides continuous power conditioning and eliminates the transfer time associated with switching from utility power to batteries. Online double-conversion UPS systems are commonly used for critical data center applications where power quality and availability are priorities.
  • Line-interactive UPS. A line-interactive UPS regulates incoming voltage while providing battery backup when utility power is unavailable. It can correct certain voltage fluctuations without switching to battery power, making it suitable for applications that require power conditioning and backup protection.
  • Standby UPS. A standby UPS normally passes utility power directly to connected equipment and switches to battery power when a power failure or significant power disturbance is detected. This type of UPS is generally used for less critical applications where a brief transfer to battery power is acceptable.

Benefits of Data Center UPS Systems

Data center UPS systems help protect critical IT infrastructure from power interruptions and electrical disturbances. Key benefits include:

  • Backup power. Provides temporary power during utility outages to help prevent unexpected downtime.
  • Power conditioning. Helps protect sensitive IT equipment from voltage fluctuations, surges, and other power disturbances.
  • Business continuity. Keeps critical systems operating while backup generators start or utility power is restored.
  • Equipment protection. Reduces the risk of hardware damage and data loss caused by unstable or interrupted power.
  • Power monitoring. Many modern UPS systems provide information about load levels, battery health, capacity, and remaining runtime.

Monitor Data Center UPSs with DCIM Software

Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software provides centralized visibility into data center UPS systems, including their location, capacity utilization, power loads, battery health, and remaining runtime. Operators can manage battery maintenance schedules, receive alerts when a UPS loses commercial power, and view UPSs as part of the larger power chain. This visibility helps data center teams track available power capacity, plan for new IT deployments, and identify potential power issues before they lead to downtime.
