A network closet is a small, dedicated room or enclosed space within a building that houses networking and telecommunications equipment. Network closets serve as the local distribution points for an organization's network infrastructure, typically containing switches, routers, patch panels, network racks, structured cabling, and a UPS for backup power. They are found in office buildings, campuses, hospitals, and other facilities where network connectivity must be distributed across floors or zones.
The terms network closet, telecommunications closet, and IDF closet are often used interchangeably. In structured cabling terminology, a network closet typically functions as an intermediate distribution frame (IDF), a distribution point that connects back to a central main distribution frame (MDF) and outward to end-user devices on that floor or zone.
Common Equipment Found in a Network Closet
- Network switches and routers
- Patch panels for structured cabling termination
- Fiber and copper cable management hardware
- Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)
- Environmental sensors for temperature and humidity monitoring
- Physical access controls
Challenges of Managing Network Closets
Network closets are often distributed across many locations within a building or campus, making consistent documentation and oversight difficult. Common management challenges include limited visibility into what equipment is installed and how it is connected, undocumented moves, adds, and changes (MAC) made by field technicians, no real-time monitoring of power or environmental conditions, and difficulty directing remote hands to complete work accurately without on-site support.
Simplify Network Closet Management with DCIM Software
Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software extends visibility beyond the primary data center to include network closets, enabling teams to maintain accurate asset and connectivity documentation, visualize racks and cabling in 3D, monitor environmental and power conditions in real time, and manage work orders across all distributed locations from a single pane of glass.
